American Psycho – The Musical
After a successful run at the Hayes Theatre Co in Elizabeth Bay in 2019, award-winning American Psycho – The Musical is getting a second wind. It’ll have a three-week season at the Opera House’s Playhouse from June 4 to 21.
The musical, based on Bret Easton Ellis's 1991 novel of the same name and its 2000 film adaptation, won nine 2020 Sydney Theatre Awards. Like the film, it features hits by ’80s artists such as Huey Lewis and the News, Phil Collins and Tears for Fears.
Darkly satirical, the musical revolves around Patrick Bateman (Ben Gerrard), a smarmy Manhattan investment banker who indulges in the excesses of capitalism with a side of murder.
"Pairing razor-sharp satire with an ’80s pop score, American Psycho – The Musical is a thrilling revitalisation of a cult classic that explores power, privilege and narcissistic greed," the Opera House’s head of contemporary performance Olivia Ansell said in a statement.
Alexander Berlage will return as director, after being named the best director of a musical at the 2020 Sydney Theatre Awards for his work on American Psycho.
General admission tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday February 7.
