Features
Choosing where to go out for a drink in Newtown just got even harder. North King Street has just scored Huelo (meaning "sunshine" in Tongan), a cocktail bar and general store in the space previously held by late-night bar True Romance.
Better still, it’s by two guys who were at the frontier of Sydney’s small bar explosion in the mid aughts: Dre Walters (Old Mate’s Place, Ginny's Canoe Club) and Swan "Swanny" Kanongataa (ex-The Rover, Bistecca).
Hit the general store up front for good bottles of wine, locally made ceramics and a cornucopia of artisan pantry items to take away. Or settle in for deli plates, and $2 oysters and half-price magnums from 4pm–6pm Wednesday to Sunday.
Venture further inside to reveal a hidden cocktail bar slinging fun, imaginative drinks with "Miami tropical glam" energy, plus a breezy little courtyard to lose an afternoon or an entire evening in (it's open till 2am on Fridays and Saturdays).
