In the vein of community events such as Chippendale’s BEAMS Festival, Young Henrys has announced its own festival of inner-west culture, appropriately called Small World.
Young Henrys’ director and brewer, Richard Adamson, is confident the festival will be a hit with people from all over Sydney. “This is a showcase of what the inner west has got,” he says.
Spread across Jabez Street in Marrickville, over the course of the day the festival will feature live music by True Vibenation, Little Bastard, The Snowdroppers, Bloods, The Delta Riggs, and Royal Tennyson among other local acts.
Traffic will be closed to allow pedestrian access, with food and drink stalls lining the footpath. Visitors can sample some dishes from local institutions Cornersmith and Bloodwood, famous burgers from Newtown's Mary's, as well as smoky barbecued meats from Argentinian asadores Porteño.
But of course, the highlight of the day will be the beer itself, dealt directly from Newtown’s very own Young Henrys brewery, tucked just out of sight from the traffic north of Enmore Road. On tap throughout the day will be the trademark Newtowner brew, as well as its routinely popular Cloudy Cider. “The craft beer scene is really taking off,” says Adamson, who is understandably excited about what’s happening in the city’s inner-west. “There’s a really exciting buzz.”
For the first time ever, the brewery will also be serving gin distilled in the same building. Young Henry’s Noble Cut Hand-crafted Gin is a small-batch distilled gin made with juniper, orris root, Australian native bush tomato, pepperberry and Tasmanian-grown hops. “I think a lot of brewers are gin fans,” says Adamson. “We’ve just bought a 2000-litre still from America from a guy who’s an eighth-generation moonshiner.”
The Small World festival is happening on Saturday September 20. Tickets are available at smallworldfestival.com for $59 or $13 for kids under 13. The festival runs all day.
