Summer is almost upon us and Sydney is getting ready to bask in a season of blues skies and balmy nights. We’re also getting revved up for So Frenchy, So Chic, a one-day festival homage to playful summer days and picnics in the (French) park.

So Frenchy, So Chic has lined up a roster of French-inspired musical acts to get you in the mood for l’été. It has also invited excellent food acts along.

“We want to create a casual picnic atmosphere, catered by artisans who make good produce,” explains festival founder, Jean-Francois Ponthieux. “Everyone here is offering something different. A lot of the dishes complement each other really well.”

J’ai faim …

Oh shucks, Oysters Unplugged didn’t bring their fresh, hand-picked shellfish all the way out here for nothing. Knock back the highest-quality oysters, hand-in-hand with a glass of Laurent Perrier, served at the champagne bar next door. Not a mollusc man?, Le Petit Bistro is introducing La Parigot, an Australian beef patty grilled to order, served on a soft pain au lait brioche with melted French-blue-cheese aioli and smoked bacon.

Dip into L’Hotel Gitan’s bespoke menu of French hand-held treats, adapted from its menu especially for the festival. Try the brochette de boeuf with volaille, lamb and couscous, garnished with yogurt and cucumber, or the niçoise bread with Provençal vegetables, virgin olive oil and smoked salmon.

Or, why not Basque in the culinary glory of Le Pelican’s signature dishes? Try the kingfish carpaccio with lemon purée, dill and piquillo, or snails croquettes with a parsley purée and herb salad.

Picnic purveyor Bright Young Things is bringing its trademark picnic hampers to So Frenchy, So Chic. Picnic hampers can be ordered with your ticket, and contain crusty baguettes, summery salads and chocolate ganache tarts, alongside a platter of carefully curated cheese and charcuteries.

What other summer favourites are there to look forward to? Macarons, calamari, ice cream and a traditional raclette from the Alps. Oh, and the flammkuchen (Franco-German cheesy pizza), a solid favourite from last year’s event, will be making its triumphant return.

J’ai soif …

So Frenchy, So Chic will serve Kronenbourg 1664, rosé from Provence, reds and whites from Bordeaux and special cocktails from a vintage caravan.

An exciting addition to this year’s drinks menu is a glass of Lillet, the classic Bordeaux aperitif. Guests can try their hand at mixing this classic French favourite.
