With the allure of a slow-paced, drink-accompanied game, bowls clubs are a popular destination in summer. It’s the ideal way to spend a warm afternoon, with a smattering of food and beverages – all balanced with a healthy dose of competition, of course.

Bondi Bowling Club

On Warners Avenue, away from the hustle and bustle of Bondi, sits this newly renovated bowling club. It has two greens to satisfy your bowls needs as well as some tennis courts to mix it up. There’s often a lane set aside for little ones on the grass, so they can join in the fun with a lighter set of balls.

The bar and restaurant inside has a friendly, communal feel, with relaxed cane furniture, tables for larger groups and smaller nooks by sunny windows overlooking the green. There’s live music on Thursday nights and DJs playing over the weekend, which makes this a favourite spot for locals to gather in the evenings, with spruced-up pub food, craft beers on tap and a full cocktail list. Bangers and mash and beer-battered flathead are some of the classics on the menu.

Clovelly Bowling & Recreation Club

You won’t find a more picturesque spot for a bowls club than this. Sitting on a cliff over Clovelly, with the magnificent ocean creating a backdrop as you play, you can relish the beautiful views to Bronte, Tamarama and Bondi and Coogee and Maroubra on the other side, as they span round the coast.

The club, which has been running since 1947, keeps things simple and straightforward, with three greens and a pub-style bar. The club has decided to leave the bistro part out, so after their bowls sessions, players cook a well-earned snag on one of the barbeques provided.

The daily visiting bowls devotees seem to enjoy the peacefulness and uncomplicated set up at this Clovelly location. It really does emphasise taking your time and enjoying a relaxed afternoon with friends and family (or your lawn-bowls rival).

The Greens

The Greens was recently rejuvenated – turned form an old pub into a buzzing attraction – by a couple who used to work at The Grounds of Alexandria. Now, with a new energy, it makes the most of its beautiful North Sydney location overlooking the harbour. The new set up has attracted a lot of attention from locals and visitors alike. The stylish layout is bright and spacious, with comfortable places to settle both inside and outdoors. If you’re hungry after your session on the green, the menu here is great. It offers a range of fresh share plates, salads and an ever-popular lamb spit roast.

The illustrated bar menu includes all the classics alongside The Greens’ own concoctions, including sharing cocktails which come in whole pineapples and coconuts. More than just your run-of-the-mill club, yoga and film nights are also held on the greens. Sit back with a cocktail and observe the techniques of long-time bowls fanatics.
