MONA FOMA can always be trusted to let its freak flag fly.

Joining headliners The Flaming Lips is Japanese hip-hop master DJ Krush; Norwegian songwriter Jenny Hval, who released a breakthrough album this year, Apocalypse, girl; and Swedish art-pop duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums.

Also heading to Hobart in January is deaf Scottish virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie, English poet-turned-rapper Kate Tempest; Birdman composer Antonio Sánchez, who will perform the film’s electrifying drum score; and Australian theatre and pop star Kate Miller-Heidke, playing with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

While the hub will still be MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), the festival has introduced bespoke events at venues across Hobart, from the Federation Concert Hall to various arts centres.

Curated as usual by American expat Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes, The Break), the programming also covers theatre, film, art, food and multimedia offerings. Some artists will perform in far-flung sections of MONA that aren’t usually open to the public.

The line-up features some inspired collaborations. For example, Ritchie teams up with choreographer and dancer Ade Suharto, while The Necks’ Tony Buck and Aussie expat Mike Majkowski will perform with Ethiopian jazz pioneer, Hailu Mergia. Lighting visionary Robin Fox will pair up with Australian sound designer Byron J. Scullin.

Three-day passes are available for the festival, as well as some single-event tickets.

MOFO runs from January 13–18, 2016 in Hobart. Tickets go on sale at 11am today.
