When Holey Moley Golf Club took over Newtown Social Club in July this year, not everybody was happy about it. It was one of the city’s finest live-music venues.

But whether or not you’re a fan of the minigolf bar, it’s popular. And now it’s expanding to Castle Hill where it will add a new Strike Bowling Bar (both are owned by Funlab) to the formula.

This second instalment includes a cocktail bar, an 80-seat sports bar, bowling lanes, an outdoor beer garden and an escape room all under the one roof. There’s also a private bowling alley.

“It’s something unique in terms of scale,” says Holey Moley’s CEO, Michael Schreiber. “We’re mashing up Strike Bowling with a fun sports bar and Holey Moley.”

There are two nine-hole golf courses to choose from and, like in Newtown, the holes are all themed. Most are based on pop-cultural references (nostalgic and/or satirical); tee off beside Indiana Jones, members of the Ghost Busters and characters from Back to the Future.

The food and drink is just as over the top. There are layered burgers (which come with a syringe of melted cheese), corn dogs, loaded fries, mini sliders and shakes. Beer towers sit beside Espresso Partinis and Sugar Katys (made with vodka, Cointreau and raspberries).

With seven venues around Australia, the company’s strategy is hardly a secret. “It’s a pretty aggressive expansion. There’s a lot happening,” says Schreiber. Holey Moley will launch in Perth on November 23.

Holey Moley will open on November 30 at Castle Towers.
