Goodbar is back, with cocktails, toasties, whisky and live music, all until 3am. With Big Poppas serving pasta and wine at 3am; The Unicorn open until 3am and now the return of Goodbar, this lower Oxford Street strip is turning into a late-night go-to.

“There's been so much doom and gloom in Sydney but the reality is, even if we have lockout laws, there's still great operators and great promoters putting on good shows. We’ve got the chance to become a vibrant city again,” says Scott Robertson. He’s the owner of the new Goodbar. “New” because it’s very different to the Goodbar that was popular until it closed in 2006.

The new venue is split into two sections. Upstairs is casual. The design is industrial, neon-lit and vaguely evocative of the New York/Berlin club scene. Less generic are the cocktails by Jason Crawley (Drinks Cabinet). Try the Soft Sand with Ketel One Vodka; coconut water; fresh ginger and lime juice; and kaffir lime leaves. There’s an impressive range of local wines and Islay whiskies, including an exclusive offering from Glenmorangie. “There are great clubs and there are great bars in Sydney, but we really wanted to combine both,” says Robertson.

Downstairs there are a few lounges and a bar for in-between-boogie cocktails, but the rest of the basement is dedicated to the dance floor, powered by an enviable sound and lighting system. Fridays will feature experimental beats and Saturdays are for house and techno. If you arrive before 9pm entry is free; otherwise you’ll need to buy a ticket.

The food matches the luxurious drinks list but is also what you crave during a late-night dancing session. There are cheese boards, charcuterie, truffle-butter popcorn and five different cheese toasties.
