With the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House in the background.

If you've been meaning to see an opera, this could be a good place to start. Puccini’s La Bohème is not just beautiful (it's also one of the most-staged operas), its performance on a custom-built stage on Sydney Harbour, with the city skyline and the city's icons in the background, will be impressive.

It's the story is of a love affair between a poor poet and an equally poor seamstress in 19th century Paris. If that sounds familiar, it's because it was the inspiration for Baz Luhrmann’s award-winning film Moulin Rouge and the musical Rent.

This production is set in a wintery 1960s Parisian landscape, featuring cobblestone laneways and bohemian costumes, and will feature fireworks and falling snow – on Sydney Harbour, no less.

Presented by Opera Australia, it's directed by Andy Morton, who has worked on the past five Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour productions.

The custom-built site includes a pop-up dining room, bar and lounge set among the tree tops of Mrs Macquaries Point.

The performance starts at 7.30pm.
