This Saturday, Redfern’s 107 Projects will transform into a digital wonderland. Electrofringe 2015 is an exhibition and workshop event by day, electronic-dance-music party by night. Roslyn Helper has been artistic director for Electrofringe since 2012.

“I was looking for artists working within the spaces between technology, new-media art and electronic art,” says Helper. “It’s really diverse, but what ties it together is the conceptual rigour the artists have with their work.”

“There’s traditionally gallery works, kinetic sculptures, projection works and generated software. But then we’ve got a performance stream that looks at gestural technologies and facial recognition. This reveals something to us about the way we use technology in everyday society.”

EF15’s exhibition explores the intersection between humanity and technology. Artistic duo Frolic and Gambol’s (Johannes Muljana and Pamela Lee Brenner) Unlocked Melody is an audio-visual projection piece that brings online passwords to life. Emily Parsons-Lord’s rooftop installation, You Will Always Be Wanted By Me, analyses the International Star Registry – it visualises the universe through coloured smoke. Sculpturecraft, is a collaboration between Warren Armstrong and a cohort of Lower Hunter school kids. It hosts a virtual sculpture in the video game, Minecraft.

The EF15 program also includes interactive workshops. Helper is most excited for the women’s coding workshop, led by Kristen Wolf, a Wollongong-based artist teaching HTML and web design, this workshop seeks to increase female representation in the coding community.

“We’re inviting any women who are keen for a coding 101 lesson,” Helper says. “We’ve also got a privacy workshop, which is very timely with the recent data-retention policies coming into place. Electronic Frontiers Australia will teach people how to encrypt stuff and how to secure their communications.”

After the exhibition and workshops, 107 Projects’ performance space will host an all-night party. DJs include FBi Radio and GOODGOD regulars Body Promise, Del Lumanta and the up-and-coming Kimchi Princi.

EF15’s day program begins at 1pm on Saturday November 28, with entry by donation. The party kicks off at 7.30pm, with tickets available online or at the door.
