We’ve put together a guide on what you can get up to this weekend across Sydney. From Parramatta to Mosman, there’s a lot happening, so don’t let it pass you by.


EAT & DRINK

Make Paper Bird’s Soy Milk Crème Caramel at home.
If you’ve decided to stay in, try your hand at Yu-ching Lee’s Soy Milk Crème Caramel. You may know the Paper Bird chef from her time heading up desserts at Sepia or you might have experienced one of her baked goods from Boon Cafe. The recipe for this South East Asian treat makes four serves, but we won’t share if you won’t.

Huddle over a warm bowl of guoqiao at Spring Yunnan
Spring Yunnan is one of the only places in Sydney you can try guoqiao, a classic Chinese noodle soup on a base of pork and chicken stock. The soup comes out boiling and you add raw meats, vegetables and herbs to the pot. While this is the specialty, you can order a selection of Cantonese and Sichuan dishes too.

Sip on a selection of Chinese tea from a new arrival in Chatswood
You’ll find more than the generic black and green tea brands at Chatswood’s new tea house, Tea Journal. All the tea sold here is grown on Huang’s family’s or family friend’s century-old tea plantations in the Yunnan mountains. Be sure to look out for the black-tea-and-rosewater chiffon cake or matcha sponge cake.

Visit the Mews in Mosman
After more than a decade in the hospitality industry, owner Daniel Kim wanted to create something special for the area. This cafe serves Asian dishes with a twist. The classics are also available if you’re feeling like smashed avocado but we suggest the Miso Mush (sourdough with smashed edamame, sautéed wild mushrooms, poached egg, black sesame, lotus chips and furikake). Coffee is covered by Grand Cru.

Try Waterloo’s all-pink, all-day diner
Don’t let the pastels and neon signs here fool you. Baby Coffee Co.’s concept is dirty junk food in a glamorous setting. You’ll definitely find that double-patty cheeseburger and loaded fries your Sunday hangover is begging for.

Experience a new don and tea eatery in Redfern
The don at Juan is unlike anything you’ve tried in Sydney. Break through the egg-covered dome to reveal a cluster of grilled-eel slices, okra, shiso leaves and onion-and-dashi rice.

Anna Ishiguro was a graphic designer before she decided to specialise in rice, so the space is minimal and will transport you to the backstreets of Tokyo. Bookings are essential as there are only 28 seats.

Visit the new Palace Central Cinemas in Chippendale
Damien Mulvihill, creative director at DesignOffice, wanted to create an environment for the new Palace Central Cinema Complex not unlike a bar that patrons would want to visit even if they weren’t seeing a movie. With 13 cinemas, a lounge serving Din Tai Fung’s dumplings and a beer hall, it’s ambitious.

Experience Thai culture at Parramatta River
Head to Sydney’s largest Thai water festival, Loy Krathong, for Thai street food, classical-dance performances and a live-cooking demonstration by Spice I Am’s head chef, Sujet Saenkham.

Shop the H&M x Erdem Collaboration
If you didn’t catch the launch of Erdem and H&M’s collection last Thursday, you can head into selected stores to revamp your summer wardrobe with floral dresses, sophisticated suits and lace gowns.

PLAY

Make a colourful clay dish
Join other creatives at this DIY colourful clay workshop, led by designer and maker Therese Lyons of Ena & Albert. You’ll be guided through simple and fun techniques on how to work with polymer clay. Leave the class with a dish you have made yourself. It’s perfect for holding jewellery and makes for a great gift.

Go climbing at a bouldering gym
Test your climbing skills by conquering the surmountable “Earth” (a giant globe with 360-degree climbs). The walls at this bouldering gym are filled with more than 11,000 European holds, shapes and textures. You’ll definitely be challenged at some point in your journey. Finish off the workout with a cold brew or beer at the Nomad cafe.
