Last month, Indian Home Diner – the Oxford Street institution known for serving booze-busting garlic cheese naan kebabs (the “number five”) until 3am – plastered a sign on its front window announcing it would be closing at midnight on weekends. This was due to a ruling from Woollahra Municipal Council rejecting the late-night hub’s application to officially extend its trading hours (it appears that in the past the diner’s late-night trading hadn’t been approved by council).

Instagram account Bondi Lines – which usually publishes wait times for entering clubs around the city – launched a campaign to get the council to reinstate Indian Home Diner’s late-night trading hours. It set up a petition (currently sitting at 4452 signatures) to lobby the council to reverse its decision, and a Go Fund Me to help cover the revenue lost due to the reduced hours. Now, Uber Eats is stepping in, and will host a fundraiser just a few doors down at The Unicorn Hotel this Saturday.

“Not being able to operate until 3am will cripple my restaurant,” said Indian Home Diner owner Robert Chowdury in a statement. “I cannot afford to lodge the appeal myself so I am immensely grateful for Uber Eats rallying community support to help me go through the process.”

Uber Eats has enlisted big-time electronic artists Cosmo’s Midnight, Bag Raiders, and Flight Facilities frontman Hugo Gruzman to take to the stage. One hundred per cent of every ticket sold – they’re $32.50 each – will help fund Indian Home Diner’s appeal, including enlisting a town planner to review the DA conditions and make a submission to try and have the ban overturned.

“We built our careers on the iconic Oxford Street strip and more often than not the night ended with a number five from Indian Home Diner,” said one half of Bag Raiders, Jack Glass, in a statement. “It would be another kick in the guts for the struggling arts and hospitality community to see this restaurant shut down [due to lost revenue from reduced trading hours]. You don’t see line-ups this big at local pubs. It’s going to be a blast for us and the fans are in for a treat.”

Uber Eats’ Rave 2 Save Indian Home Diner runs from 9pm–3am on May 28 at The Unicorn Hotel. Buy tickets here.
