Sydney’s social calendar is packed year-round, but some performances stand above the rest. In partnership with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, here’s our pick of the top concerts to catch at the Sydney Opera House this season.

· Updated on 03 Jun 2026 · Published on 03 Jun 2026

Between July and September 2026, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra presents more than 20 concerts showcasing iconic works and modern classics. With so much on offer, from crowd-pleasers like Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto to bold new pieces such as Bryce Dessner’s Trembling Earth, it can be hard to know where to start.

We’ve narrowed it down to the five performances our editors are most looking forward to. And remember: the evening doesn’t begin and end with the music. You can pair each show with a pre-theatre meal to make a night of it.

Benjamin Beilman performs Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto

Running from July 9 to 11, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto remains one of the most enduring works in the classical canon. Its lyrical passages and emotional intensity continue to resonate, particularly in the hands of acclaimed American violinist Benjamin Beilman, whose interpretations are known for their clarity and nuance.

For dinner, book a table at Cafe Sydney. Overlooking Circular Quay, the restaurant balances polished service with a relaxed atmosphere, making it a reliable choice for a pre-theatre meal.

Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto

Famed for its thunderous opening movement and rousing passages for solo piano, Beethoven’s evocative Emperor Concerto is equally epic. Under the baton of Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor Simone Young, audiences can expect a precision and power rarely heard from Spanish pianist Javier Perianes from July 22 to 25.

Such grandeur demands a top-tier dining experience. Tucked into the sails of the Sydney Opera House itself is Bennelong, where the stunning arched ceiling of Australia’s most famous landmark presents a feast for the eyes. Your tastebuds, meanwhile, are catered for with a contemporary Australian menu presented by the pinnacle of Sydney fine dining.

Simone Young & Sheku Kanneh-Mason

From July 30 to August 1, conductor Simone Young joins celebrated British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason for a program pairing Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Strauss’s richly layered Alpine Symphony. Together, the works move between moments of intimacy and grandeur, showcasing the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at full scale.

Afterwards, settle in at Whalebridge. The harbourside restaurant is known for its seafood-focused menu and waterfront setting.

Mozart’s Requiem with Stephen Layton

Legendary and inscrutable in equal measure, Mozart’s Requiem (performed from September 9 to 12) embodies a thrilling passion woven through exquisite moments of fear. A powerful, dramatic and mournful reflection on death, the Requiem is Mozart’s final and unfinished masterpiece.

Led by Stephen Layton, one of the world’s leading choral conductors, a concert of this scale demands a high degree of glamour. Aria’s floor-to-ceiling views of Sydney Harbour are pitch perfect, while its pre-theatre menu keeps things running on schedule.

Lucas and Arthur Jussen perform Poulenc

Charismatic Dutch siblings Lucas and Arthur Jussen are lauded for their rockstar combination of technical prowess and effortless stage presence, making any performance an immediate standout. From September 3 to 5, they take on Poulenc’s dazzling Concerto for Two Pianos – a piece known for its playful energy and dramatic flourishes. It’s a rare opportunity to experience the full energy and interplay of two pianos side by side.

To round out the evening, head to Tapavino before the show. The Spanish wine bar’s pintxos, tapas and extensive wine list make it ideal for a pre-concert dinner.
