In the fall-out from coronavirus social-distancing measures, the cinema industry has been hard hit. Theatres across the country have been forced to close, with no indication as to when they’ll be opening back up again. The folks behind the Mov’in Bed outdoor bed cinema have a novel solution: they’re launching a rooftop drive-in theatre in the Entertainment Quarter.

Running from May 28 until the end of June, the set-up will allow cinemagoers to watch films from the comfort of their own cars, socially distanced and with the sound broadcast via your own car radio. There’s a cracker line-up of films showing, including classics such as Grease, Scream and Kill Bill, as well as more recent big-hitters such as Jojo Rabbit, Joker and Knives Out. Kids are welcome to experience the nostalgia as well, with family-friendly screenings of Jumanji: The Next Level, Frozen 2 and the first four Harry Potter films.

New York-style pizza will be delivered straight to your (car) seat. For toppings, choose between margarita, pepperoni, Hawaiian, four-cheese and Nutella. If you’re not the designated driver, there’s also a licenced bar stocked with wine and beer.

Cars will be arranged according to size, so everyone gets a banging view (oversized four-wheel drives to the back, please), and you can even bring your dog – as long as it stays in the car. Most importantly, Mov’in Bed is working on a bunch of measures to ensure the event follows health and safety guidelines and remains Covd-19 free. All staff will wear masks and gloves, and hand sanitiser will be available in public areas such as bars and toilets.

Mov’in Car runs from May 28 until the end of June at the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park. Tickets are $49.40 for a car of two people or $59.90 for a car of three to five people. Tickets are now on sale here.
