Sydneysiders are spoilt when it comes to New Year’s Eve celebrations – our harbour fireworks are consistently rated some of the best in the world. Now revellers have the chance to ring in the new year on Unesco world-heritage Cockatoo Island: from today a ballot is open to stay in one of the island’s historic houses or apartments.
Successful applicants get to spend five nights in the heart of the action – a unique and prized position because Cockatoo Island is the only harbour island you can stay on overnight on New Year’s Eve.
Each apartment and house has an outdoor viewing area, and there are options for between two and 12 people. On New Year’s Eve there will be live music, tours of the island, food outlets, bars and other activities. And of course that killer fireworks view.
The ballot is open from now until 11.59pm this Sunday, August 25. Applicants will find out on August 28 if they’ve managed to nab one of the island’s early 20th-century houses or apartments. If not, and you still want to stay on the island, tent and camping packages are also available, and those spots go on sale on September 2 at 9am. There’s both deluxe – tent, bedding and seats included – as well as BYO packages available.
