At first, Laura Jean’s self-titled album seems a gentle, folk affair. But after listening a while, a nice contradiction is revealed; the brutally honest lyrics disclose a personal, emotional ferocity that is far from passive.
The album was recorded in the UK with producer John Parish, who’s previously worked with PJ Harvey, Tracy Chapman, Goldfrapp and dozens more. Jean says working with Parish was “brilliant” and that she has been a fan of his work for some time. She wanted to work with him and so sent Parish her demos out of the blue. He liked them, and although it took a few years, they eventually came together to create Laura Jean.
Listen out for Parish’s vocals on the closing track, Prince of Kites, as well as those of Norwegian singer Jenny Hval who also features on the record.

SUBSCRIBE NOWIt’s Jean’s fourth album and she says, “It’s the most confidant and relaxed I’ve ever been in the studio. I didn’t have the drama or the self-doubt I had previously. Recording the album just felt effortless … as though I’ve finally found my feet.”
Jean’s now excited to hit the road and tour with her band of local musicians, Evelyn Morris, Biddy Connor and Raquel Solier.
Laura Jean is released August 22 on Chapter Music and is available to pre-order on vinyl, CD or mp3 from chaptermusic.com/laura-jean.
