It’s not all cake and negronis around here, though it’s not a bad day on the job when the sun’s shining and you spend the morning motoring around the harbour’s islands. As picturesque as they are, the outcrops that dot our waterways are more than just pleasant spots to lay a picnic blanket. We’re incredibly privileged to live in this beautiful land, and even though we do enjoy Kings of Leon playing on Goat Island up in the Hawksbury, or the Biennale taking over the spooky, industrial expanse of Cockatoo Island, let’s consider the original purpose of these places. Sydney’s islands served as a gathering point for the Indigenous clans of this region for corroborees, hunting and recreation for generations. So for this issue’s cover story, we explore their rich history, and talk to those who live and work on them, or with them.

While you’re not island hopping this autumn, take a trip along the T3 Bankstown train line for some snacks at each stop, or head up the Bells Line of Road to check in on chef Sean Moran’s cafe at Mount Tomah. It has brightened up the Botanical Gardens’ information centre a hundred fold. Note down some of the local charcuterie that has taken an interesting turn, from wallaby and juniper salami to duck prosciutto, and make sure you have it with Young Henrys’ first gin, finally available now.

It’s hard to believe that when MercedesBenz Fashion Week Australia launched I was just seven years old, but we had a great time picking the memory banks of some of our most iconic designers as we celebrate 20 years of the festival this year.
