Orange is the New Black’s Yael Stone has confirmed she’s leaving one of Sydney Theatre Company’s most anticipated 2018 productions, Saint Joan. The star is quitting the show because she’s pregnant with her first child.
“We’re absolutely thrilled for Yael and wish her all the best for this exciting new chapter of her life,” says STC artistic director Kip Williams in an official statement.
Stone was due to play the title role in the reimagining of the Nobel Prize-winning writer George Bernard Shaw’s 1923 play.
It seems Stone likes to keep her private and work life cheek to cheek – she auditioned for her role in the Netflix TV prison drama the day after marrying fellow Australian actor Dan Spielman.
Saint Joan is one of the highlights of Kip Williams’s punchy first season for STC 2018, which includes a number of strong female-focused shows such as Top Girls by Caryl Churchill and an adaptation of Ruth Park’s A Harp in the South.
Known best as Lorna Morello in TV series Orange is the New Black, Stone is also an accomplished theatre actor; her last performance with STC was in Honour in 2010.
Saint Joan will be showing at Roslyn Packer Theatre from June 5 to June 30 next year.
