Beyond East Hampton, at the eastern tip of Long Island is Montauk – a relaxed, seaside surf hamlet and the home of The Surf Lodge hotel. The famed boutique boathouse and restaurant attracts well-heeled New Yorkers and celebrities on weekend escapes. It has also become admired for its intimate concert series, which this year featured Solange, The Flaming Lips and Mac DeMarco. While Montauk is thousands of miles away and typically experiencing icier temperatures at this time of year, The Surf Lodge experience is coming to Sydney via a New Year’s Day party at the Watson’s Bay Boutique Hotel.

The Surf Lodge’s Australian creative director, Sasha Benz, says the Sydney swap is a logical fit. “There’s a massive beach culture, very relaxed and very chilled. So in that way it’s quite similar to Australia. There’s a very similar energy to that of Byron Bay or Noosa.” The Surf Lodge’s restaurant, Byron at The Surf Lodge, is also Australian led, with Melbourne-born Chris Rendall at the helm.

The Surf Lodge’s one-day beach party will feature a live performance by Californian-based, indie-pop singer-songwriter BØRNS, as well as a line-up of Australian DJs including Set Mo, Deutsch Duke, Oli Benz, Dan Single and party kings from the Motorik Vibe Council. With henna tattoo artists on-site, as well as live art installations, a photo booth and secret designer giveaways – this will be a small slice of Montauk on Sydney’s harbour. “It will be so much more than a party and just drinking in the sun,” says Benz. “The idea is to test the waters, and to see how Australia receives The Surf Lodge, because we would like this to be a more regular appearance.”
