LANKS is the new electronic solo project by 24-year-old Will Cuming, one of Melbourne’s hardest-working musicians.

LANKS plays with traditional folk storytelling by placing it in the framework of electronic music. His music is part Radiohead’s intricate grooves, part Bon Iver’s layered vocals and mixes in something like Jamie XX’s famed dead space, while still presenting something undeniably new.

After releasing his first EP, Thousand Piece Puzzle this year, being invited to play Bigsound and Paradise Music Festival and receiving love from publications such as NME, LANKS is embarking on an east-coast tour to celebrate the launch of his new single Brave Man.

To mark this occasion, he’s named his top five electronic acts for us.

I'lls - Plans Only Drawn
This band is one of the best live electronic bands I've ever seen, and they're from Melbourne as well. They have such a mature sound and consistently blow me away with their layered sounds and analogue synths. Simon Lam's vocals are haunting, too.

The Acid – Veda
I was so fortunate to get the chance to support these lovely guys when they were out for Splendour in the Grass, and I’ve been listening to their LP, Liminal, non-stop since then. It’s sonically very interesting, with really strong melodies, and they aren't afraid to take risks, which I really like. Ry X is also my cousin and I couldn't be prouder of the music he has been creating with both The Acid and Ry X projects. They are also currently touring with Alt-J through the US, which is just amazing. Expect big things from these guys over the next year or so.

Andrei Eremin – Ghosts feat. Fractures
Even if you don’t know Andrei’s own output, you will have heard his production/engineering skills across a range of other records, like Chet Faker and Oscar Key Sung to name but a few. He has a very balanced approach to music and makes some incredible sounds whilst not sacrificing production for songwriting. This is a beautiful tune, and features another talented man, Fractures.

Thief – Broken Boy
Thief has this whole R’n’B thing really down, and I'm such a fan of dark R’n’B. He really knows how to write a pop song, and this one is my favourite of them all.

Planète – Visions
Dion Tartaglione is such an incredible musician. He’s played in bands for people like Owl Eyes, and this is his own stuff that he has been putting out for a while. These compositions really suck you in, all the sounds are so perfectly placed and deliberate. He also did an incredible remix of my song, Green Light, which is up on SoundCloud, too.

LANKS is playing the Oxford Art Factory on Friday November 6. You can RSVP here.
