At 5pm tonight it’s lights on for Vivid – back after a two-year Covid-induced hiatus. As ever, the sails of the Opera House will be illuminated with mesmerising projections (this year by the Martumili Artists collective from the East Pilbara), along with the MCA, Customs House and the Harbour Bridge pylons. But this year, the Vivid light walk stretches further than ever. The historic sandstone exterior of Central Station will light up; the Goods Line tunnel in Pyrmont, which rarely opens to the public, will be become a light- and laser-lit portal; and a floating walkway will wend between 150 illuminated bubbles in Walsh Bay.

Broadsheet got a preview of the light spectacular. Click through our gallery for what to expect.

Vivid Sydney 2022 runs from May 27 to June 18.
