US psych-rock veterans The Flaming Lips will follow up their latest trick – working with Miley Cyrus, who recruited them for her new album and current string of shows – with an appearance in Hobart in January for top billing at MOFO at MONA.
The band is the first act announced for the festival’s 2016 line-up, which will be unveiled in full (and go on sale) on Friday October 16. Next year marks the Lips’ 35th year as a band, a colourful run during which it has collaborated with everyone from Nick Cave and Yoko Ono, to Henry Rollins and Peaches. It also holds the Guinness World Record for the most concerts in 24 hours (eight). The Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz album was dropped by surprise at the end of August, fresh off its Video Music Awards performance.
Known for its outsized, interactive live show, The Flaming Lips will play the outdoor stage at Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art, bringing a huge dose of summer-festival spectacle to MOFO’s trademark multi-venue event.

SIGN UPMOFO (the colloquial for MONA FOMA, which is short for Museum of Old and New Art: Festival of Music and Art) is now in its eighth year, and has in the past hosted Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Philip Glass and Japanese light and sound artist, Ryoji Ikeda.
MOFO runs from January 13–18, 2016 in Hobart. Tickets go on sale at 11am Friday 16 October.
