Independent cinema chain Dendy announced on Twitter today it will not renew its lease at Opera Quays, and the venue will close on February 26.

“We’d like to personally thank you for your patronage over the last 20 years and we hope to welcome you at our sister cinema in Newtown,” the statement said, before going on to point out that the remaining Dendy cinema is in a handy location.

The Dendy cinema chain, which first opened as a single-screen cinema in Melbourne, came to Sydney in the 1970s. It opened in Newtown in 1994 and its harbour location followed in 1999 – in a building locals call “the toaster” – and for several years it had a presence at Martin Place. The chain was bought in 2008 by Mel Gibson’s film company, Icon Film Distribution, for $21 million.

Dendy Opera Quays closes on February 26, 2020.
