A Strange Thing Is Happening in the Skies Above the Overseas Passenger Terminal Tonight
It’s an eerie November night in Sydney and something isn’t quite right. The sky has gone an ominous and fiery red, there’s a dark energy buzzing around the docks, and the world feels spiked by an evil charge that nobody can quite put their finger on. Stranger things have happened, but in Sydney, we’ve never felt something quite like this.
To celebrate the final, cacophonous season of Stranger Things, Netflix has unleashed the almighty powers of Vecna over Sydney Harbour. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or just someone who relishes a little mysterious excitement, this is one experience you won’t want to miss.
Tonight, on November 26, the often-overlooked Overseas Passenger Terminal is shaking off its usual cruise-y shackles and transforming into the blistering world of the Upside Down. And, unlike the many horrifying otherworldly portals popping up in Hawkins, Indiana, this is one we want to get close to.
With a giant red rift set to rip apart the skies above Sydney Harbour and a small town Indiana bar arriving in Sydney for just one night, the scene is set for you to grab your besties and cycle down to the Terminal tonight, before it’s too late.
You’ll spot the excitable masses of Stranger Things fans (some in costume) before you get to the portal. With a snaking line moving quickly through Circular Quay, we hear that people have been camping out all day to get a first look.
Starting at 8.30pm (and repeating throughout the evening), look up to see a gigantic holographic screen positioned right in front of the Harbour Bridge, making you feel like Vecna is about to take over the harbour city’s beating heart, one scaly grab at a time. With tall flames shooting up all around you, flashing crimson lights and gigantic clouds of red mist, you can feel the heat of the Upside Down in this immersive experience.
While Vecna’s fury could be visible from all around the harbour, the best views will be at the Northern Wharf at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, where you’ll get front-row seats to a mammoth projection that’ll have you praying for Eleven to descend through the sky and save the day.
Once the Upside Down has been defeated, you’re obviously going to need a drink. Just around the corner, the Harbour Bar at Squire’s Landing is transforming into a Hawkins-themed drinking hole, complete with tangled black vines, a glowing DJ booth, themed photo moments and a special viewing deck for the daredevils who want to get close to Vecna at his most horrifying.
It’s a fitting send-off for a show as big and beloved as Stranger Things after nine years, five seasons, and plenty of spooky twists. With just eight episodes left to mark the end of this mega-chapter in pop culture, we’re soaking it up as much as possible – and there’s no better way than to enter the Upside Down’s Sydney dimension tonight.
