Dee Why has plenty of waterside eateries to take you through the day. But until Ullo came along, the pickings were pretty slim after dark. This cool pizza and wine bar by Oi Hospitality Group (Banco, Corretto) changed all that, bringing a much-needed shakeup to the suburb's nightlife scene in 2023.
Red neon signals your arrival to the dining room, where timber tables-for-two join bench seating and a bar, with rows of lo-fi wine bottles circling the space. There’s a breezy balcony too, with views of the ocean. The place is party-ready – namely via the DJ booth in one corner.
Pizza and pasta are the stars of the menu – but the offering is more Italian-ish than strictly Italian. A 48-hour fermented pizza dough is the base of Neapolitan-style pizzas, while toppings and sauces feature local ingredients – like the sausage pizza that’s layered with LP’s pig’s head meat, provolone cheese, honey and lemon basil.
Swinging by just for a snack? A menu of bites might include wood-charred brioche topped with anchovies and stracciatella, or kingfish carpaccio layered with mascarpone. All pair nicely with the Australian-native cocktail list.
For anyone not quite ready to quit the daylight, pizza and bottled cocktails are available to take away to the grassy area by the beach, and watch the sunset. Obviously, come back for drinks at the bar afterwards.
