When sommelier Amir Halpert opened his own place, he wanted the house-made philosophy to extend from the kitchen right through to the bar.

Step into the tiny World Class drinking venue to find people crowding happily around the long bar, sipping cocktails. Halpert (a New Yorker by birth) and co-owner Paul Loulli can often be found trading stories and creating easy banter among guests as they peruse the tight 50-bottle, five-continent wine list.

It’s a friendly squish, but a neon sign directs you to the second level, where things are a little more diner-friendly. Here there are cosy individual tables and attentive service, while eclectic design touches abound.

The best seat in the house is unquestionably the diminutive four-seater balcony. It’s so narrow you can hardly turn around, but proves a perfect perch for night-owls to watch Darlo shenanigans.

Chef Roy Ner's six-course degustation has become a Sydney favourite but there's also an a-la-carte menu of charcuterie and larger mains executed with trademark flair, placing this bar firmly in the dinner-with-your-drink category.
