Long before the east coast sandwich deli boom, there was Loaf in Cronulla. This pastel-hued cafe and sandwich shop is now a longstanding fixture in the mall, but owners Annaleigh Sturmann, Kirsty Wirth and Chantel Toutounji have more than kept up with the times.

Huge sandwiches on thick-cut bread from Cronulla Bakehouse (ferrying produce from Sydney Markets) is the main game here. But the morning roster sees cafe classics take the stage, served with locally roasted coffee by White Horse. Don’t look past the mushroom jaffle vamped with two cheeses, spinach and sweet onion.

But if you’re here at lunchtime, sanga highlights include a southern spiced schnitzel number, a technicolour salad one, and the Hambo stacked with shaved ham, vintage cheddar, caramelised carrot, pickles, red cabbage, mayo and mustard.

The team at Loaf also encourages the choose-your-own adventure route. Brown or white bread? How about a wrap instead? There’s also a raft of add-ons and the option to turn your sanga into a salad, making Loaf a rare breed of modern sandwich shop where you get exactly what you want.
