A motion passed last night will allow gay couples to have weddings at certain venues for free if same-sex marriage is legalised. Prominent parks and buildings, such as Paddington Town Hall, will be available free of charge for 100 days after the poll result, if the "yes" vote is successful. A full list of venues available has not yet been released. Heterosexual couples will not have to move weddings to accommodate the expected influx of bookings.
Sydney Town Hall will also host a mass same-sex wedding if the law is changed.
Not all were in support of the idea. Liberal councillor Christine Forster said last night, "This has been a fight for equality before the law and it's my belief that we can't ask for equality for ourselves and then deny it to others."
The result of the vote will be announced on November 15 but the government still has to make legislation after that.
