January 9, 2018 will forever be known as the day same-sex couples in Australia could officially get hitched. To mark the occasion, Sydney Festival is hosting a giant wedding reception the likes of which the city has never seen.
Happening in the Meriton Festival Village tonight, spouses-to-be will be able to party in a bright pink swimming pool, join 10 Minute Dance Parties hosted by JOF (Joseph O’Farrell, a multi-art performer who has curated for Falls Festival), and take a spin on the world’s first Karaoke Carousel. And what’s better than celebrating love? Well, doing it all for free, of course.
Blackstar has baked a five-tiered pavlova cake with rainbow layers; Messina are doing a one-night-only run of salted caramel and fior di latte gelato coated in biscuit crumb, dubbed Equality Time; while My Little Panda Kitchen will bake a vegan cake. Asked about the involvement of cake-makers in the event – a group often drawn into the same-sex marriage debate – My Little Panda Kitchen's Annabelle McMillan says she's glad to be associated. "It's a platform for me as a queer vegan baker. I'll happily bake a cake for anyone, except a bigot. It’s a chance to galvanise my political stance.”
The reception will take place between 6pm–8pm with cake and champagne (party-goers who have donned their gladrags can expect free Piper-Heidsieck) served at 7.30pm. DJ Charlie Villas will be spinning classics all night long.
The Sydney Festival will continue to run until January 28.
