A new underground walkway called “Central Walk” will connect Chalmers Street to the new Sydney Metro platforms being built beneath Central station. The NSW Government said yesterday the 19-metre-wide tunnel will help Central Station accommodate 66 per cent more foot traffic, creating more access points for platforms 16–23.

Construction is expected to start in 2018 in line with the new Sydney Metro project. The project will take three years.

Commuters should expect disruption during construction. Along with general construction and changed walkway patterns, platforms 13, 14 and 15 will be closed to make way for the Central Walk and the new Metro line.

The idea is once completed, the new access points and additional walkway will make it easier to transfer between services.
