After a long, bruising and divisive campaign, the results of the same sex marriage survey have been announced, with Australians overwhelmingly saying Yes to equality.

Yesterday’s final polls had the Yes vote in front. But in a post-Brexit, post-Trump world, nobody was prepared to put their faith in anything but the final result.

Yes, the survey was needless, and needlessly harmful.
Yes, it doesn’t mean same-sex marriage is legal.
And yes, right now the forces against marriage equality are mobilising to continue delaying any opportunity for real change.
But at the same time; yes. This is a win. It is meaningful, it is wonderful, and it’s worthy of celebration. Here’s where.

Official Sydney Results Announcement
The main pro same-sex marriage lobby group, The Equality Campaign, is hosting Sydney’s main event at Prince Alfred Park in Surry Hills until 1pm. A big screen showed the result, with performances to come from John Paul Young (he of the now-iconic Love is in the Air), Alfie Arcuri (winner of last year’s The Voice), and others. You’ll also hear Magda Szubanski, Ian Thorpe, Alex Greenwich, Kerryn Phelps, Lord Mayor Clover Moore, Christine Forster, Tiernan Brady, Janine Middleton and many others giving speeches. A selection of Sydney’s top food trucks will also move in for the occasion (but you’ll have to turn up to find out which ones).

From 9am until 1pm.
