Sydney’s public transport services changed last Sunday November 26 to respond to a growing population. It’s the biggest overhaul of city’s rail timetable in four years, with more than 8600 new bus, train and ferry services added weekly.

And we all know that with change, comes commotion.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports Sydney University has criticised the changes, which have had a “serious impact” on thousands of its students, staff and other commuters. According to a spokesperson, it’s because the Blue Mountain line no longer stops at Redfern station, making trips “lengthier and more challenging” for students.

Commuters travelling from the west on the Blue Mountains line are now forced to change services at Strathfield, or else travel to Central and then catch another train one stop back to Redfern.

Vice-chancellor Michael Spence said the decision for trains to skirt Redfern, headed for Central Station instead, had “added greatly to the university’s already significant public transport pressures.”

“We are disturbed we were not consulted about such a significant change,” he said in a letter to the state opposition.

Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins said that the number of trains stopping at Redfern has actually increased by 11 per cent across the board. He also cited increased bus services from Central to Redfern.

“In the weekday morning peak, five times as many customers from Blue Mountains stations are travelling to Central rather than Redfern,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Granville state Labor MP Julia Finn said she has already collected hundreds of signatures as part of a petition to reverse the changes.
