Twenty venues in the CBD and Kings Cross have received government approval to extend their trading hours until 3.30am.

Kings Cross Hotel and Establishment are among those allowed to stay open an extra half hour, and patrons will now be able to enter the premises until 2am.

In February the former Baird government exempted venues screening the Olympics and NRL Grand Finals from the lockout laws, as well as live-entertainment venues World Bar in Kings Cross and Oxford Street’s Stonewall. Statewide changes were also made to takeaway sales and home-delivery of alcohol last year, with the cut-off time for sales extended from 10pm to 11pm.

“Half an hour is a start. We’re going to look at how extended trading hours have worked to see what the impact has been,” NSW Racing minister Paul Toole tells Broadsheet.   According to Toole, who’s responsible for NSW liquor regulation, the option for extending trading hours has been positively received. “We want to ensure there’s a diverse range of night-time entertainment options – pubs, bars and nightclubs – while balancing the need for community safety,” Toole says. “Everyone wants Sydney to have a vibrant nightlife. I’ve been working towards that aim. It would be great if we can go even further, but that will depend on what happens now with the extra half hour,” he says.

Ben McBeath, managing director and licensee of the CBD’s ArtHouse Hotel, tells Broadsheet patrons have already benefitted from the extra time. “They are not having to race to the city and then only have a short period to enjoy the live entertainment. There is a longer time people are spending in the venue, as opposed to getting new patrons.”
