It’s Official: Sydney Has Had Its Wettest Year Ever

Annual rainfall totals have been smashed in Sydney today as the city officially breaks its annual rainfall record – with nearly three months to go.

At 1.10pm today, Sydney’s Observatory Hill recorded 2199.8 millimetres of rain for the year so far – making it the city’s wettest year on record. The gauges at Observatory Hill have received more rain in 2022 than any other year since records began in 1858.

Until today, 1950 had been the wettest year on record in Sydney, when 2194 millimetres bucketed into the city’s rain gauges. Today that record has been smashed, with nearly three months to spare.

Sydney surpassed its average annual rainfall back in April after a dangerously wet autumn. The double impact of a negative Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) event and the third La Niña in a row conspired to keep conditions in the city depressingly damp throughout winter and spring.

A break from the tumultuous conditions is expected over the coming days before another weekend of devastating downpours.
