After a pregnancy that lasted 22 months, Asian elephant Pak Boon has given birth to a male calf at Taronga Zoo.

The birth happened early Friday morning without any assistance from the Taronga team and took about half an hour, which, according to Taronga veterinarians, is fast.

The baby weighed 130 kilograms and is healthy and already suckling. The addition to the Taronga elephant family is fantastic news for a species that is in decline due to poaching.

Mother and baby are currently bonding in the lower paddock of the zoo, but will be on display in the upper paddock once they are settled. Taronga will be announcing a Thai name for the calf soon.
