All Randwick Council beaches, including Maroubra, Clovelly and Coogee, have been closed once again due to overcrowding. The beaches were reopened on Monday for exercise only, but closed around 1pm today as scores of people visited them for purposes other than exercise.
A Randwick Council spokesperson said a large number of people – mainly families and children – were “having a splash” in the water, rather than using the beaches for swimming, surfing, jogging or walking, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
The beaches will reopen tomorrow morning, however they could close again if people continue to defy social-distancing rules and use them for reasons other than exercise. Randwick Council’s beaches had been closed since March 28, but reopened on Monday with the proviso that sitting or sunbaking on the sand would not be allowed.
Beaches at Bondi and Manly remain closed.
