Like getting places quickly? You’ll be bang out of luck this Sunday, as City2Surf takes over a 14-kilometre stretch of road from the CBD to Bondi, with the flow-on effect from closures set to impact big chunks of the city.
Major road closures will begin from 3.30am in CBD, and from 7am in the eastern suburbs. Roads will gradually start reopening from 11.30am in the CBD, 12pm in Edgecliff, 1pm in Rose Bay, 2pm in Vaucluse and Dover Heights, and 4pm in Bondi.
If you’re one of the 80,000 registered City2Surf runners, you’ll be able to travel to and from the event for free via train (unless you’re coming from the airport), Metro, bus, special shuttles, ferry and light rail. Everyone else has to pay, but public transport will still be the best way to get around the area before, during and after the event.
For participants, the closest train stations to the Hyde Park start line are St James, Museum, Town Hall and Martin Place. Trains to the city will run every 10 to 15 minutes, with services starting from 4am, depending on the line. Extra services will depart Leppington a 5.53am and 6.23am, stopping all stations to Cabramatta, then all stations to Lidcombe, via Regents Park, Flemington, Strathfield, Burwood, Ashfield and Redfern, then all stations to Circular Quay via Town Hall.
Buses will replace trains on the T3 Bankstown line between Cabramatta, Lidcombe and Sydenham. Those planning on travelling on the T2 Leppington and T5 Cumberland lines will have to take rail replacement buses between Cabramatta and Granville, but not between Leppington and the city via Regents Park.
Post-race shuttle buses will run back to Bondi Junction station. Trains from there will run every five minutes from 10am to 4pm on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line between Bondi Junction, Central, Hurstville, Cronulla and Waterfall stations, with extra stops at St Peters and Erskineville. Metro trains will run as normal from 4am, with services every 10 minutes.
After the race, Route 333 services to Circular Quay will run from a temporary stop on Bondi Road at Sandridge Street from 9am to 4pm.
If you’re driving to or from the race, or around the city and eastern suburbs, there are a number of road closures to be aware of.
In the CBD between 3.30am and 12pm sections of College Street, Macquarie Street, Park Street and St James Road will be closed. From 6am to noon William Street from Yurong Street to New South Head Road at Ocean Avenue, the Eastern Distributor Kings Cross exit and Palmer Street off-ramp will be closed. Access to the Cross City Tunnel and Craigend Street (westbound only) will be available via McLachlan Avenue.
Parts of Old South Head Road and Bondi Road in Bondi will be clearways between 1am and 4pm (cars will be towed), as will parts of New South Head Road between 1am and noon in Double Bay, Point Piper and Rose Bay.
