King Street between Clarence and York streets is currently closed due to a police operation. NSW Police are asking the public to avoid the area, after a man with a machete was arrested while reportedly trying to stab members of the public.

The Guardian reports that a shirtless man allegedly chased members of the public with a machete. He has since been arrested, and police have confirmed that one person has been stabbed.

On Twitter, NSW Police said, "Police operation King and Clarence Streets, Sydney CBD. Please avoid the area. More to come..."

Before police arrived, the man was allegedly detained by members of the public, who used chair and milk crates to pin him down. Footage shows the man jumping on to the roof of a car and falling to the ground when the car tries to drive away, with members of the public in pursuit.

Merivale's Hotel CBD has been declared a crime scene and is currently in lockdown, with patrons still inside.
