Sydney’s CBD will be flooded with protestors on Tuesday when an expected 10,000-strong crowd will march through the city’s streets.

The march – organised by the Australian Council of Trade Union (ACTU) – will begin at 10.30am at Belmore Park near Central Station. From there it will head up Pitt Street, east along Bathurst Street, then down Castlereagh Street to return to Belmore Park at 12.30pm.

Live Traffic NSW is advising motorists to avoid travelling in the Haymarket and south-eastern Sydney CBD area during this period. Road closures will be in place from 12.15 to 1.30pm on sections of Castlereagh, Campbell, Goulburn, Hay, Liverpool and Pitt Streets.

The afternoon road closures will add to the current road closures along George Street, due to the light rail construction.

A NSW Police spokesperson said there will be a moderate police presence that will be monitoring this afternoon’s rally.

The rally is part of the ACTU’s Change the Rules campaign that aims to lift the minimum wage to help workers keep up with the rising cost of living.

Organisers of the march – which will coincide with a Melbourne equivalent and others across the country – are basing their 10,000 turn out estimate on a similar march in May through Sydney’s CBD.
