The Steam Engine makes the esoteric world of coffee accessible to those who need to catch a train in 10 minutes. The cafe looks small initially, but it has a semi-hidden section with seating.

Owners Roland Davies and Samuel Werrett get to know their customers. They might encourage them to try other brewing methods, or go just one day without added sugar, to see how it tastes. They’ve also been known to connect people who catch the same train daily, but who’ve never met.

The coffee here is Toby’s Estate, and attention to detail and consistency is strict. The espresso uses a specialised house blend, and two single origins are available daily. Other methods include batch, pour-over, syphon (Saturdays only), AeroPress, cold brew and cold drip.

The baristas will happily provide Bonsoy and almond milk. There’s a selection of cakes and pastries available to complement the coffee, including gourmet muffins by Nutorious. Smoothies and milkshakes are also on the menu.
