When the founders of two Surry Hills staples join to open a new cafe, you’re in for a good thing. Jono Forsythe (founder of Mad Pizza e Birra) has teamed up with chef Deepak Singh (previously owner and chef of Kanteen) to create a sunny and welcoming all-day cafe right on the wedge of Elizabeth Street and Wentworth Avenue. They’ve nabbed a location right in the thick of things, turning out breakfasts and lunches for the busy city rush, with dinners to be served soon.
A charcoal palette is brightened here and there by splashes of yellow –the black-and-yellow tile counter is the focal point of the slick space. The signature breakfast hash hinges on 12-hour slow-cooked and smoked brisket, served with house barbeque sauce, crisped potatoes, jalapeno salsa and finished with a fried egg. The Brother Burger is filled with beef patties, beetroot relish, caramelised onions and pickles, sandwiched in a milk bun. Burgers and sandwiches are the go-to, backed up by mellow Allpress coffee. There’s a tight list of wines and beers that include Sydney Cider and Printhie wines from Orange.
