Small Bar started it all. Back in 2008, when Sydney's old licensing laws were traded in for more sensible regulations, Small Bar was the first to give it a go and bring a new type of drinking experience to the city.

Set in an old terrace off Erskine Street, Small Bar is set over three levels. The cellar level is all exposed sandstone and is a stellar spot to sit out a winter's evening. The ground level houses the main bar, while the upstairs space is a narrow room reached by some very steep stairs.

There are no beer taps, but ale enthusiasts should check out the huge bottled selection. There are standards such as Corona and Peroni, as well as Australian brews like Little Creatures Pale Ale, Two Birds Golden Ale and Pigs Fly Pilsner. Wine is the bar's biggest seller and the menu traverses more than 30 drops (most of them from Australia and New Zealand).

Shared plates are the go food-wise. There's lamb kofta, eggplant with miso mayo, or mushroom and parmesan arancini varieties. They also do a pretty serious cheeseboard. More substantial dishes include pulled-pork nachos, a duck salad and a towering cheeseburger.
