Located at the former Weston biscuit factory in Camperdown, Runcible Spoon is an unassuming cafe that many of us could only hope was in our neighbourhood. With Edward Lear’s words scribbled on the wall (and the inspiration for the cafe’s name), Runcible Spoon features a cosy indoor dining space comprising a compact open kitchen and a bookcase stacked with jars of spices and cookbooks. Many choose to sit amongst the communal tables in the outdoor terrace, where the dull concrete setting has been decorated with a bountiful display of terracotta pot plants.

Orders are taken at the counter, where the La Marzocco machine brews Golden Cobra coffee. At first glance, the blackboard menu is more exotic than your average weekend breakfast, with a distinct Thai influence. If Thai-style fried eggs with rice, nam jim and pork belly are not your caper first thing in the morning, then opt for the potato rosti with roast tomato, avocado and poached Berrima Ridge eggs, or vanilla and lemon muffins with ricotta cream inside or tarte tatin.
