The Public

11:00am - 12:00am
429 Miller Street Cammeray 2062

Two local brothers have taken over the Cammeray Belgian Beer Cafe and transformed it into The Public, a bar and restaurant with a Greek influence. James and Will Christopher (responsible for Ms. Miller a few doors along and The Laneway cafe a couple along from that) have delivered another dining venue that fits neatly into the local landscape. The food comes out of the open kitchen courtesy of chef James Featherstone and is focused on share plates, but there are bigger not-sharing plates, too.

Dishes are elegant and simple. There is tangy housemade tzatziki with oregano oil; chunky Greek salad; crumbled spiced lamb with hummus, pine nuts and pomegranate molasses; and prawn and ouzo saganaki with almonds and slow-braised tomato.

White tiles and light plywood with aqua finishes evoke a subtle Greek-island feel in the back dining area. The front bar, with high tables and booths, make this a great local hangout for drinks and a burger. There are beers on tap and a thoughtful selection of fresh cocktails lead by The Public No.1 (elderflower liquor, vodka, pear juice and Earl Grey bitters). The Public strikes a balance between local bar and relaxed dining effortlessly. There’s baklava ice-cream sandwiches for dessert and late-night souvlaki after 10pm on the weekend.
