When Jennifer Foreman’s brother was younger, parsnips at her family’s Sunday roast were simply white carrots. While seeking inspiration for her Darlinghurst kitchen, White Carrots seemed a fitting name to honour the space with. This split-level interior has modest furnishings, a communal table and a window silhouette of three white carrots done by designer Pane in the Art.
With coffee by Gypsy Espresso, breakfast plates showcase cafe favourites such as corn fritters with spiced avocado salsa, crème fraîche and smoked salmon or truffled mushrooms on organic sourdough with whipped goat’s curd and pine nuts. And don’t skip dessert – try the vanilla rice pudding topped with rhubarb compote.
By midday, generous bowls of salads are on offer, made from whatever is most fresh at the markets that day. Try a combination of quinoa, fennel, beans, green olives and tuna. There are also vegetarian samosas or chorizo sausage rolls. Rustic sandwich fillings are scrawled on the blackboard with options such as tender pulled pork and slaw or a grilled haloumi wrap with olives, roast capsicum, spinach and zucchini.
Linger around for sweets such as chocolate and ricotta cake, rocky road or gingerbread also ready to take home.
