From the owners of Sydney-famous doughnut-makers Grumpy Donuts, Valentina's is an all-day cafe inspired by classic, old-school diners found throughout New York and Los Angeles. With a rich palette of burgundy, deep sage and timber, it’s a sophisticated contrast to Grumpy’s celebration of colour and confection.
The menu takes cues from American diner food, but it isn’t a greasy spoon. When developing the menu, co-owner Scott Clark’s aim was to strike a balance between simplicity and attention to detail. Breakfast standouts include the English muffin – filled with sausage or egg and cheese – and thick, diner-style pancakes in serves of one to three.
Later, you might order a “patty melt” with two dry-aged beef patties on thick rye toast; or a fried chicken or club sanga followed by a slice of pie. Coffee is by Artificer, and because this place is licensed, there are beers by The Grifter Brewing Co and a tight selection of natural wines on offer.
The focus on detail finds its way into all elements at Valentina’s. From the fit-out to the branded retro order pads used by staff, the aesthetic is consistent throughout, making this one of Sydney’s best-looking cafes. Curves also dominate the design, with chalky-white curved walls and curved edges on the tables and chairs. The best seats in the house wrap around the elegant, round timber counter overlooking the kitchen.
