Tucked into a tidy spot in the bustling Five Ways of Paddington, Tiger Mottle is a comfortable local haunt geared towards great coffee, good food and spinning great tunes to keep the mood friendly.
Saturday breakfast here is like staying over at a friend’s house to find that your mate cooked breakfast and got you OJ and coffee before the day hit you. It’s really got that lounge room sort of vibe.
Situated in a restored and updated terrace – a style that is the mark of the territory in Paddington – there’s ducks on the wall flying out for the winter and homemade bread and butter pudding on the counter.
The food is a comforting medley of breakfast and brunch favourites that might include homemade crumpets, a brekkie salad with gooey poached eggs, or toast from Brasserie Bread.
But it’s the coffee options that are a local favourite. This is more than just a caffeine hit; the coffee itself hails from Golden Cobra and features specialities like the maple mottle (double ristretto over cream with maple syrup and chilli), the South American (served with condensed milk), or the affogato topped with pistachios.
All brews are made to the double ristretto technique and the name of the cafe comes from the stippled pattern that appears in the crema of a perfectly extracted espresso. Owner Pete Henderson (often along with his wife) can be found on the floor and we guess that’s what keeps the atmosphere so homely, and the coffee so spot on.
