A sunny oasis, surrounded by palm trees and harbour views, where granddad can have a bowl next door. Welcome to The Greens, where husband-and-wife team Lilly and Nathan Fasan (from The Grounds of Alexandria) have created a sleek summer haven.
The bright, spacious layout provides ample room for bowlers and diners alike. Huge vintage photographs bring character to the interior, and an enormous, rustic garden invites relaxation with recycled brick and mismatched tables.
Early on, head chef Nathan Tillott serves up porridge, hot-smoked trout and an omelette. As the day progresses share plates take over. Taste test with smaller bites such as wood-roasted bull-horn peppers, oxtail croquettes and heirloom tomatoes.
Mains include a Wagyu beef burger or a whole baked snapper for two. Substantial salads will appease the health conscious, but a safer bet is the succulent lamb spit roast. Lilly’s homemade chutneys and jams are available beside the barista bar, where an exclusive blend is supplied by Marrickville’s Double Roasters.
Bar Manager Matt Le Rade has created boozy delights at The Roosevelt, Pelicano and Palmer & Co. The Salted Cuba Libre, of Le Rade’s own concoction, is a standout; punchy blended rum is counteracted by a house-made salted cola syrup. Sharing cocktails (enough for four) arrive in whole coconuts, pineapples and watermelons.
The manicured turf hosts yoga-on-the-green mornings from Friday to Sunday and screen-on-the-green nights on Thursdays. For avid bowlers, the lawns next door are still operational.
