Sur Bourke Espresso Bar

Tucked away in the backstreets of Darlinghurst is Sur Bourke (meaning ‘On Bourke’), a charming French-inspired cafe serving Toby’s Estate coffee.

The breakfast menu starts the day with ‘a la Française’ options; simple pleasures such as Sonoma brioche with homemade jam with plump juicy strawberries. You’ll also find Croque-Monsieur Traditionnel on the menu, in all its melted, toasty glory, and as close to the original as you’ll find.

The French influence comes from the owner, Yan Martinez, who hails from Bordeaux where he was a graphic designer. But it was his interest in coffee that prompted him to open a place of his own and Sur Bourke offers a Toby's Estate single origin that rotates every week.

Food is served on mismatched vintage crockery, housed on a rack made by Martinez’s father, who also made the wooden benches.

The space is quirky yet aesthetically pleasing, with bikes for sale mounted on the walls, berets perched on hooks, water bottles sitting in an antique suitcase and a communal table découpaged with images from Tintin comics. It’s a cosy space you’ll be quite happy to settle in and savour every minute like a true bon vivant.
