Superfreak

There’s plenty to love about Superfreak, a cafe/eatery next door to Scout Pilates in Marrickville. First of all, it’s by Soulmate’s Michael Ico and Dan Harrison, so you know there’s some strong hospo pedigree under the hood.

Then there’s the menu, driven by Aplenty’s Michaela Johansson, which favours the kind of stripped-back, homely style of food seen in Melbourne’s Florian and Juniper, or Sydney’s much-loved, now-closed Cornersmith. All of it’s tasty and quick to grab – prime if you’re running out of a Pilates class or heading across the road to sit under the trees in Enmore Park.

But really, we need to talk about the interior design by YSG Studio, which puts Superfreak in the running for Sydney’s best-looking venue. Green, gold and timber anchor the palette. In one corner, “DESTINO” is spelled out across a flag by Venezuelan-Australian artist Nadia Hernandez. At the door there’s a truly special Wonka-esque lamp by American artist Autumn Casey. A record player spins Harrison’s own vinyl collection, housed in a bespoke cabinet built into the wraparound shag-covered seating.

There’s something good to look at no matter where you sit – and it makes for one of the coolest cafe-dining experiences in the city.
